Day 1

We’ve landed, gone through customs, and are now on our way out to meet Rob and Jen. Wait a minute, where are Rob and Jen? No worries, they know we’re coming. They’re just a few minutes late.

Twenty minutes later, a trip to McDonald’s, and a quick price check of pre-paid cell phones, the jokes commence. They do remember that we were coming today, right? Did they even really move to Australia and are we now here with nowhere to go? After a quick withdrawal of funds and a purchase of a bag of chips (all in an effort to get the change needed to make a phone call), I asked a guy who was sweeping the floor to help me dial the number. Phew! Turns out they are just a few minutes away and will be here any minute. Not long after, Jen runs up to greet us (Rob is circling the departure terminal) and hugs begin.

On the drive to Bronte, everyone catches up with each other. It’s both good and a little surreal to be here. It’s a bit mind boggling as well to realize we are so far away from home. After relaxing at the apartment for a bit, it’s time to take the show to the beach. With a few hours at the beach under our belt, and about three shades of darkness already added to my skin, we head back the apartment so Rob and Jen can get ready for their touch Rugby game.

Leslie and I tag along on the walk to the park to watch Rob and Jen, along with the rest of the Playerz, play Rugby. After watching Rob tumble to the ground a few times, Jen try to catch a ball that no one is actually throwing to her (which she doesn’t recall happening), Leslie and I realize that a storm is brewing. Great. We left bad weather in New York to come to Sydney, and now it’s going to rain here. Sprinkles start to fall and thunder can be heard in the background. With keys in my pocket, we decided to go back to the apartment so we don’t get stuck in the rain. After letting Jen know we’re taking off, things start to get a little worse. Lighting gets closer, thunder gets louder, and rain drops get larger and more frequent. I turn to Leslie and say, “Leslie, do you realize we are in the middle of a lighting storm right now in the middle of a huge open park?” We quickly hightail it back the apartment where we are now watching the most recent Pink concert on DVD while Rob and Jen are graciously making dinner while I’m typing, and Leslie is clapping to the concert and drinking her wine on the floor. To Leslie’s defense, we are all drinking wine.

I’m staring to question, “Am I typing too much?” It’s possible, but this blog is as much for me as it is for you. Hope you enjoy. I know I will when looking back at it in the future.

Till tomorrow.
